She was always my favorite. I haven't seen much of her work outside of Golden Girls but her work on that one show speaks volumes. As this article at salon.com points out,
Sure, Blanche's seemingly bottomless appetite for conquest was played for laughs, but credit goes to McClanahan for getting those laughs while rarely playing Blanche as that sorry lady at the end of the bar, clinging to faded glory.Watching reruns of Blanche as a young girl she became a very feminist character for me. Blanche was strong and independent. She thoroughly enjoyed her own sexuality. She was also old! She was unlike any woman in my life at the time.
I must go home and watch some episodes tonight!
