So... top kill failed. And now the latest in inappropriately named efforts has failed as well. The thing that gets me is that not only is the Gulf filled with disgusting amounts of oil, but that every second that goes by there is more and more and more and more. It is an unending violent spew of oil with no end in sight. As Obama said this weekend, "It is as enraging as it is heartbreaking."
It is enraging. It is maddening. But what is worse is that I feel completely helpless. BP is showing little actual interest in stopping the immediate flow. According to one engineer, there are different options in dealing with the mess that BP has not explored. And what do we do when a company commits such violent and disgusting acts against our people and our land? Why, we look to our government to protect us. Well, they're not being much of a comfort either. No one seems to know what the hell to do. Have we asked James Cameron?
Our land, our soil, our livelihoods, our ecosystem are being pillaged and destroyed with every passing moment and it feels as if we are all just watching it happen. There's no point in praying for the best. The worst has already happened. The worst is happening. And at this moment I feel that it will continue to happen until there will be nothing left to save.
In the meantime, America, continue to fill up at your local BP station. Weeks of oil spilling hasn't deterred you yet.
